Strengthening International Trade and Relationships

Canada-U.S. Relations
Premiers value the relationships they established in the United States during their successful mission to Washington D.C. in February 2010 and look forward to building on these in the future.

Canada is the number one global supplier of energy to the United States. Access to American markets for Canada’s energy is essential to maintain and further develop secure, sustainable energy resources for the mutual benefit of both countries. Governments will work together to ensure access to these markets. Premiers will also work together to highlight their leadership on climate change by seeking out opportunities to promote Canada’s expertise in clean energy technologies and will advocate for the recognition of Canadian hydroelectric power and tidal energy as renewable energy sources in U.S. legislation. Premiers also stressed the need for continued investment and targeted measures that will improve efficiency and collaboration on key border issues. Federal investment in technology, infrastructure and human resources at borders is critical to ensuring traffic flows as efficiently as possible.
