Canada’s Premiers to visit Washington, D.C. on June 6-8

May 31, 2017 – Yukon Premier Sandy Silver, as Chair of the Council of the Federation, will lead
a joint mission of Canada’s Premiers to Washington, D.C. from June 6-8, 2017.

Joining him on the mission will be Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant, Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister, Prince Edward Island Premier Wade MacLauchlan, Newfoundland & Labrador Premier Dwight Ball, and Northwest Territories Premier Bob McLeod.

The aim of the visit is to build and enhance relations with key American political leaders. Discussions will focus on issues of importance to Canadians including trade, energy, softwood lumber, agriculture and border issues. Premiers intend to underscore Canadian contributions to American security and prosperity.

“I am honoured to be leading this mission of Canada’s Premiers to Washington, D.C.,” said Yukon Premier Sandy Silver. “Working together to expand trade and ensure the security of our shared borders are important priorities for Canada’s Premiers. Canada has a special relationship with the U.S. and this relationship is a vital part of the prosperity and economic security that Canadians and Americans enjoy today."

Nearly 9 million U.S. jobs depend on trade with Canada. Forty-five U.S. states have Canada among their top three export markets. Some 400,000 people safely and securely cross the Canada-U.S. border every day.

This will be the fifth international mission of the Council of the Federation. A previous mission to Washington, D.C. was undertaken in 2010.

The Council of the Federation comprises all 13 provincial and territorial Premiers. It enables Premiers to work collaboratively, form closer ties, foster constructive relationships among governments, and show leadership on important issues that matter to Canadians.
