OTTAWA, January 15, 2009 – The Council of the Federation met this afternoon in Ottawa to allow Premiers to have a preparatory discussion prior to the First Ministers’ Meeting to be held tomorrow in Ottawa.

At their meeting, Premiers also approved modifications to the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) that were proposed by their ministers to ensure full labour mobility in Canada and to put in place an enhanced AIT-related dispute mechanism, as was requested by Premiers at the July 2008 Council of the Federation Meeting in Québec City.

“We are proud of the leadership shown by the Council on these key issues that are essential to the vitality of our economy and our federation. In the current context, it is critical that all governments work together,” said Premier Jean Charest, who chairs the Council.
