Improving outcomes for Aboriginal children in care

Improving outcomes for Aboriginal children in care

ST. JOHN’S, July 17, 2015 – The high number of Aboriginal children in care remains a concern for Premiers. They released a report on the issue, prepared at their request, which identifies promising practices to reduce the number of children in care and improve outcomes for children receiving care.

Premiers agreed that the report sets a good foundation for future work and forwarded it to the Aboriginal Affairs Working Group and provincial/territorial ministers responsible for Social Services for consideration in their own work. Ensuring the best possible outcomes for children is a shared responsibility among families, communities and governments. In particular, Premiers emphasize the importance of intergovernmental cooperation in this work and reiterate their call on the federal government to play an active role in this issue.
